Summerville is approximately 25 miles north of the historic city of Charleston. It started as Pineland Village around 1785 as a place where plantation owners enjoyed the area as a summer retreat to escape the heat, mosquitoes and malaria that prevailed around the coastal areas of South Carolina.
Adopting the motto "The Flower Town in the Pines" 73 years ago, Summerville has maintained the beautiful landscaping of the municipal and private gardens.
