Folly Beach is located approximately 15 miles from historic Charleston, South Carolina.
The history of Folly Island is very interesting. The island was used as an encampment for British troops during the Civil War. In the 1930’s, Ira Gershwin, stayed at a west side beach house and wrote the musical, “Porgy and Bess.” In 1989, hurricane Hugo destroyed many older homes on the island, which were replaced with larger, more traditional beach houses.
Also known as “The Edge of America”, it is a popular surfing area along the southeastern coast of the state. It is a bohemian beach community with surf shops, restaurants, gift shops, and churches along Center Street.
A wide variety of homes can be found on the east side, and on the west side, of the island. There are properties along the Folly River, where private docks and a public boat landing allow access to the river and the Atlantic ocean. Interior properties enjoy the shade and beauty of the many oak trees and Palmetto trees, which are indigenous to the island. The beachfront properties have incredible views of the Atlantic ocean, splendid sunrises and glorious sunsets.
Homes vary from condominiums to executive residences. Residents range from single professionals, to families with kids, to retirees. Prices range from $500,000 to millions of dollars. Most homes are vacation rentals or second homes, with a permanent population of about 2,500.
If you are looking for a condominium or cottage for a second home, you might be interested in renting your property during the time you are not present.

Folly Beach homes consist of beachfront, marsh front, deep water, and interior properties. There is a marina with boat slips on the west side of the island, a great fishing pier at the end of Center Street, and a surfer’s delight at the washout on the east side of the island.
