West Ashley, SC Charleston Single Style Homes

West Ashley in Charleston SC is an area that features the classic single style homes in moderation. While they are very popular in Historic Downtown Charleston, SC, few can be found in the newer neighborhoods of West Ashley. This early housing styles feature a narrow floor plan and large piazzas on the front and-or on the sides. Many locals in Downtown Charleston state that they were built in a narrow fashion because property taxes were based on how much street frontage a home occupied. The skinnier the house, the less one would pay in taxes if this were in fact the case.

One aspect of the Charleston Single style that has been confirmed is that the large piazzas, and large windows were opened to accommodate the warm summer breezes in an effort to cool the house during the heat of the summertime. The design of the Charleston single style home is only one room wide. The efficiency of nature's HVAC was maximized and the houses of the 1800's were kept as cool as possible considering the circumstances. It could be opened on all sides to let breezes flow through the entire house with ease.  The West Ashley real estate market offers a few of these truly Charleston style homes and are found primarily in newer neighborhoods.
