Kiawah Island and Seabrook Island are located approximately 21 miles from Charleston, South Carolina.
England’s Lord Proprietors granted 2700-acre Kiawah Island to Captain George Raynor in 1699, where he grew cotton and maintained a cattle ranch. In 1737, The Island was owned by John Stanyarne. Upon his death in 1772, the island passed on to his granddaughters, Mary Gibbes and Elizabeth Vanderhorst (who built a plantation house on the island with her husband.) In 1780, the Vanderhorst plantation house was destroyed by the British. In 1801 a new house was built and remains standing today.
Seabrook Island is adjacent to Kiawah Island. In 1951, the 1408-acre island was owned by the Episcopal Diocese of South Carolina, and was used as a summer camp for children. In l970, the diocese sold 1,100 acres to developers who planned the residential community that Seabrook Island is today.
Housing options vary from condominiums to exclusive homes. Residents range from single professionals, to families with kids, to retirees.
