In addition to being located in one of the most scenic and beautiful, Wadmalaw Island homes are some of the most rural in the area. Steeped in history, the ancient oak trees that are hung with Spanish Moss speak of an era that has gone by with few changes making it a very quiet recluse for many area home owners.
Wadmalaw Island is roughly 10 miles long and 6 miles wide. Crossing over Church Creek is the only access and the large Bohicket Creek wraps its way around most of the island that then connects at the mouth of the North Edisto River.
Having grown up at the end of the Leadenwah Creek (which leads in from the North Edisto) at Selkirk Plantation, Nat Wallen knows the Wadmalaw Island homes quite well. He has many stories that he remembers growing up on the cattle farm his grandparents purchased in the 1940’s and has documented them in this blog post.
If you are driving through Johns and onto Wadmalaw Island on Maybank Highway, you will come to a split in the road. By bending left you will remain on Maybank and within a few hundred yards you will find the gated community of Longcreek.
Longcreek is known for its large lots where Wadmalaw Island homes enjoy private 7-20 acre lots. The homeowners association is made up of a group of like minded individuals that maintain their Wadmalaw Island homes and yards to blend in well with the pleasant low country atmosphere.
By bending right at the fork you on Bears Bluff Road, you will find a number of smaller properties along both sides of the road and several large tracts of land on the right that border the Wadmalaw Sound and the Intracoastal Waterway. Wadmalaw Island homes on these large tracts are very scenic and an example can be seen in the popular blockbuster film, “The Notebook”.
If you are looking for condos or townhouses, you will not find any in your search through Wadmalaw Island homes. The area is too rural for these types of developments which makes the place as special as it is. Passing through it will lead you through a blur of fields and trees and you will finally find yourself stopped because the road ends in Rockville.
Rockville is a sought after small village that features 20-25 Wadmalaw Island homes. This small community is known for it’s sailing regatta, occurring the first weekend August, bring party goers into the small creek in droves to watch the race and celebrate the summer doldrums with cool beverages and a weekend long party for locals and newcomers alike.
