Goose Creek Homes
Goose Creek homes are located in the area between North Charleston and Summerville, and approximately 15 miles from Charleston, South Carolina.
The source of the name "Goose Creek" has been lost to history. One theory is that the area was named after the gooseneck turns in the creek that extended off the Cooper River. Others say the name came from the prominence of geese in the waterway.
Most early Goose Creek settlers were from Barbados. As early as 1672-1673 they were settling the land along Goose Creek, defying the wishes of the Lord Proprietors who planned to develop the land into an orderly settlement. These early pioneers faced hunger and disease as they struggled to build new lives in the frontier. For the next 150 years, their Goose Creek homes did thrive with the success of the rice, indigo and other crops grown on their large plantations. While the Revolutionary War gave America its independence, it altered the economy of the area. The end of slavery meant the end of the plantation system, ending the Goose Creek economy. From 1900 to 1950 the Goose Creek area was a collection of settlements of small farms clustered near country churches.
The city stayed undeveloped until after World War II, when the military began to occupy and invest in the area. The influence of new military and civilian personnel led to a re-birth of the area, and was the beginning of a new Goose Creek.
Goose Creek homes today occupy the land of former plantations. They vary from condominiums to exclusive homes. Residents range from single professionals, to families with kids, to retirees.
