Mount Pleasant, SC Charleston Single Style Homes

Charleston SC classic single style homes are unique to Charleston, SC and are all over downtown, but they can also be found in Mount Pleasant, SC as well. This shotgun style offers a narrow floor plan and large front or side porches. Popular lore around Downtown Charleston is that they were built narrowly because a home owner's property taxes were based on how much street frontage a home had. The narrower the house, the less one would have to pay in taxes. This of course is debated among historians and tour guides alike.

One aspect of the Charleston Single style home I can confirm is that the large porches and large windows were opened to accommodate the warm summer breezes. This was an effort to cool the house during the heat of summer. With the Charleston single style home only one room wide, the efficiency of nature's HVAC was maximized. This was a very important variable in design at the time. The house could be opened on all sides to let breezes flow through the entire house with ease. In today's modern world, air conditioning is not so much a factor, yet Mount Pleasant offers these classic Charleston Single Style homes for several reasons. Primarily because they work well on smaller lots.
