Johns Island, SC Charleston Single Styles

Charleston SC classic single style homes are very popular floor plans in Charleston, SC.  In fact, Charleston Singles can be found as far out as Johns Island. This style is one of the earliest housing styles known in the area and feature a large porches and narrow, one room wide floor plans. Some say that they were built narrow because property taxes were based on how much street frontage a home had in the 1800's. The narrower the house, the less one would pay in taxes, so building in this style would save money each year.  There are many master tour guides in the area that debate the truth of this rumor.

Tour guides discuss the Charleston Single style home by stating that the large piazzas, and large windows were opened to accommodate the warm summer breezes. This design enabled the house to easily cool during the heat. With the Charleston single style home only one room wide, the efficiency of a home was maximized in the pre-air conditioned era.  The house could be opened on all sides to let breezes flow through the entire house with ease.  While there are not too many that come up each day on in areas other than Historic Downtown Charleston, a few of the newer neighborhoods on Johns Island will offer the popular SC floor plan.
