James Island, SC Charleston Single Style Homes

Charleston SC classic single style homes are popular in Charleston, SC.  A few of these plans can be found on James Island. The Charleston single style homes feature a narrow floor plan and large porches on the front or sides. Many Charlestonians say that they were built narrowly because property taxes were based on how much street frontage a home occupied. The narrower the house, the less one would pay in taxes. Nobody is really certain that this is in fact the case.

One aspect of the Charleston Single style home I can confirm is that the large piazzas, and large windows were opened to accommodate the warm summer breezes in an effort to cool the house during the heat. The Charleston single style home is only one room wide so the efficiency of nature's HVAC was maximized.  Effectively, the house could be opened on all sides to let breezes flow through with ease.  While there are not too many offered in SC other than Downtown Charleston, Charleston Single style homes can sometimes be found on James Island.
